Our impact
Nottingham Express Transit, Phase 2, UK
Background
Nottingham Express Transit Phase Two (NET) is an extension of the existing Nottingham Express Transit Line One by two further tram lines. The 22-year and 3-month Concession Agreement with Nottingham City Council covers the financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the two new lines and the operation and maintenance of the existing Line One.
The full network has been in operation since August 2015. Nottingham is now a city experiencing the benefits that come with having a modern and reliable light rail public transport system. NET provides direct public transport connections to several of the City’s major employment sites.
These include Nottingham’s QMC Hospital and treatment centre, the ng2 business park, Nottingham University and Nottingham Trent University and Nottingham Science Park. NET also serves large event venues including Theatre Royal and Concert Hall, Nottingham Arena and Nottingham Tennis Centre.

ESG/SDG Key Facts
Despite NET’s already strong ESG profile, the Project Company is actively seeking ways to improve its sustainability impact. During the coming financial year, solar PV will be installed at the depot roof, generating 100% of the non-traction energy used at the depot.
Additionally, an initiative is underway to replace the litter bins at over 100 tram stops with segregated waste bins, enhancing waste recycling capabilities throughout the Project.
Recognizing the diminishing need for in-person transactions, the physical Travel Centre will be phased out over the next year. The cost savings from this transition will be reallocated to bolster police presence across the network, thereby curbing fare evasion and antisocial behavior, and enhancing public safety for both staff and passengers.
A study by a team of researchers from The Economic Strategy Research Bureau (ESRB) of Nottingham Trent University found that the three-year build phase of the PPP Project created around 4,500 years of employment and c. £217mof local economic activity, with a further 230 full-time jobs created in operation of the NET trams.
